Green Shoes - How Can Your Organization Fit In?

Ever wondered about how your organization is contributing to climate changes?

It is now widely accepted that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contribute to global warming. These are gases in the atmosphere which reduce the loss of heat into space, hence contributing to climate change. Knowing our levels of carbon emissions is the first step in the environment sustainability journey.

According to the UK Carbon Trust, a carbon footprint is the "total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product." For an organization, this can be emissions from its activities or the use of fuels and electricity as well as the use and disposal or materials, products and services.

In Singapore, the government is actively playing their part in the environment as evident from the Singapore Green Plan 2012, a blueprint for environment sustainability in Singapore. In addition, students are now delving deeper into environmental issues and studying topics such as climate change and renewable energy.

On the corporate front, companies may have embraced or started to embrace environmental practices as part of their corporate social responsibility but many more in Singapore still lag in the green game as evident in the study commissioned by Fuji Xerox Singapore with 80 companies across various industries in Singapore. It revealed that most of these companies implemented only basic green practices such as setting devices to low power and printing double-sides.

The question now is how and where should an organization start? Fuji Xerox Singapore have developed a "Green Scorecard" that provides a snapshot of where your company stands in green and lean efforts and identifies ways for more efficient energy usage.
